A physical inspection guide to cuticle alignment, acid baths, and end-density standards.
There is no governing body or laboratory standard for hair grading. Numbered grades (8A through 12A) are arbitrary labels invented by trading brokers to justify pricing tiers on identical bundles.
Grade labels are marketing, not measurement. Two bundles stamped "12A" from different suppliers can be chemically opposite — one cuticle-aligned, one acid-stripped. The number tells you nothing about how the hair was sourced or processed.
Acid-Stripped Hair: Floor sweepings and mixed-source hair have reversed cuticles. To prevent tangling, factories bathe the hair in hydrochloric acid to burn away the cuticle completely. The hair is then dipped in heavy industrial silicone to simulate softness. Within 3 to 4 washes, the coating dissolves, leaving coarse, unmanageable hair that knots permanently at the neck.
True Cuticle-Aligned Hair: Hair collected with roots and tips oriented in the same natural direction. Cuticles remain intact and flat without requiring chemical acid stripping or silicone masks.
Test a sample strand or bundle before scheduling full installation:
Low-grade bundles are cut thick at the top with heavily tapered ends to reduce weight costs.

| Single Drawn | 40–50% short hairs mixed in. Sparse perimeter. | Loses 3–4 inches during perimeter blend. |
| Double Drawn | 80%+ strands reach full advertised length. | Retains full length with blunt, solid ends. |
| Method | Ideal Natural Hair | Move-Up | Key Factor |
